ULTRASONIC TESTING

IDENTIFYING AND SIZING SUB-SURFACE DEFECTS IN MATERIALS

Flaw detection is the process of identifying and sizing sub-surface defects in materials. One of the most common techniques to identify defects is ultrasonic inspection where sound waves, propagated through the material, are used to identify such anomalies. Generally, sound waves of high frequency are reflected from flaws and generate clear echo patterns.

ADVANTAGES OF ULTRASONIC INSPECTION

Portable instruments record and display these echo patterns. Ultrasonic testing is a safe testing method that is widely used in various service industries and production process, particularly in applications where welds, castings and structural metals are used.

  • Internal defects can be detected and sized
  • Thick specimens and thin specimens take same time inspect
  • Access to only one side of the component is sufficient
  • No radiation hazard in ultrasonic examination
  • Volumetric and crack like defects can be detected, irrespective of the orientation
