Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced nondestructive examination technique that utilizes a set of ultrasonic testing (UT) probes made up of numerous small elements, each of which is pulsed individually with computer-calculated timing (“phasing”).

The TOFD technique (Time of flight diffraction) is an ultrasonic image-generating technique, which offers the capability of detection, location and sizing. To a certain extent characterization of discontinuity in the weld material as well as in the adjacent parent material is also possible. Compared with purely reflection-based techniques, the TOFD technique, which is based on diffraction, is less sensitive to the orientation of the discontinuity.

The total focusing method (TFM) is an advanced imaging method. The principle is first to perform a full matrix capture (FMC), which consists in acquiring each transmit-receive signal of a phased-array probe. Then, the output image is computed by focusing at each point of the image using the captured raw data. The purpose is to show the application of TFM imaging for girth weld inspection.

Guided Waves Pipe Line Screening

Wavemaker™ uses guided waves to inspect pipes for corrosion from one point. The system has the ability to detect defects in a part of a pipe that is buried or inaccessible. A probe ring is placed around the pipe and transmits guided waves through the pipe in either direction of the probe ring. The pulse echo type operation provides information on feature position and approximate size. The interpretation of results is done with sophisticated analysis aids.
